565.072. Domestic assault, first degree — penalty.
It’s a serious crime to try to kill or badly hurt someone you live with or are close to.
This law makes it a felony to try to kill or seriously injure a “domestic victim,” like a spouse, partner, roommate, or family member you live with.
1. A person commits first-degree domestic assault if they try to kill or knowingly cause—or try to cause—serious physical injury to a domestic victim (this includes a spouse, ex-spouse, someone you live with or used to live with, someone you’re dating or have dated, or a family member by blood or marriage).
2. This crime is usually a class B felony. But if the victim is seriously hurt, it becomes a class A felony, which is even more serious.
