302.302. Point system — assessment for violation — assessment of points stayed, when, procedure.

Missouri adds points to your license for traffic violations—and too many can cost you your license.

Missouri uses a points system on your driving record. Every time you’re convicted of certain driving offenses, points get added. Too many points and your license can be suspended or revoked. You can also “stay” (avoid) points by completing an approved safety course.

1. Points are added after you’re convicted or forfeit bail. Common point values:

Offense Points
Any moving violation (state law or local/federal traffic rule), except equipment or supervised drivers
(Municipal stop-sign w/o accident)

(1 pt)
Speeding

(2 pts)

(Section 577.060)

First conviction DWI or DUI (controlled substances) 8 pts
Second+ conviction DWI/DUI or high BAC (0.08%+) 12 pts
First conviction high BAC (0.08%+)
(State law/local/federal)

Violating tow-truck ordinance at accident scene 4 pts
Endangering an emergency responder (Section 304.894) 4 pts
Aggravated endangerment of an emergency responder (Section 304.894) 12 pts

2. If an accident causes injury or damage, you get 2 extra points on top of the basic points, if the court certifies it.

3. You can only get points once for the same act, even if it breaks both state and local rules.

4. You can avoid (“stay”) points for a single violation by completing an approved defensive-driving or motorcycle-rider course within 60 days of conviction. You get to choose in-person or online. You can only use this option once every 36 months. The court or its central bureau will verify completion and tell the state.

5. Courts must report course completions to the Director of Revenue within 15 days. The Director will keep records and make the system work.
