559.604. Cost of misdemeanor probation to be paid by offenders, exceptions.
If you’re on probation for a misdemeanor, you usually have to pay each month—unless the judge says you don’t have to.
If you’re on probation for a misdemeanor in Missouri, you’re normally expected to pay between $30 and $50 each month for your supervision. But if paying would be too hard, the judge can lower the amount or remove it completely.
1. The government doesn’t cover probation costs for misdemeanor cases. If you’re placed on probation, you have to pay a private company that supervises you. The judge will decide how much you owe each month, but it must be between $30 and $50—unless the court agrees you qualify for an exception, such as:
- (1) You’ve tried to find a job but can’t get one that pays enough to cover the cost.
- (2) You’re a student in a job-training or school program, and the school confirms you’re enrolled.
- (3) You have a physical or mental condition that makes it hard to work, based on a medical exam the court accepts.
- (4) You’re too old to find suitable work.
- (5) You take care of dependents, and paying the fee would cause serious money problems.
- (6) You have another special situation, and the judge agrees it makes sense to reduce or remove your payment.
- (7) You’ve been legally moved to another state while on probation.
