This is a full-time, in-person position based at our office in downtown St. Louis. You’ll be part of a trial-focused, team-oriented firm that fights hard and cares deeply.
About the Role
As a criminal defense attorney at Combs Waterkotte, you’ll manage your own caseload, handle hearings and trials, and work closely with clients through every step of the process. You’ll have support from a talented legal team and the autonomy to own your work.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing a caseload across assigned jurisdictions
- Attending and conducting evidentiary hearings, depositions, and trials
- Meeting with clients to discuss discovery and case strategy
- Communicating with prosecutors, judges, and court staff
- Conducting legal research, investigations, and negotiations
- Participating in docket calls in municipal and state courts
- Leading client consultations and facilitating onboarding
- Preparing motions, pleadings, and trial materials
- Collaborating with colleagues to resolve cases effectively
- Maintaining up-to-date, accessible case files

Minimum Requirements:
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Active license to practice law in Missouri
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Courtroom experience or desire to build it
- Strong legal writing and analytical skills
- Proficiency with technology (Microsoft Office, case management systems)
- Reliable, professional, and team-oriented
- Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
Preferred but not required:
- Illinois law license
- Experience in criminal defense or trial advocacy
